I'm sorry but it actually was planked. Look at the book "Titanic: an Illustrated History" with illustrations by Titanic historian Ken Marshall and you will see that the roof is shown to be planked. So unless Ken doesn't know what he is doing (he is the foremost expert on the appearance of the Titanic), I would go with the planked roof. I have also been confirmed of this by another Titanic historian in a discussion group. Apparently the Olympics roof was painted - whether it was white or not no one knows - perhaps this is where the confusion stems from. Most models I have seen also show the planked roof (see the MaritimeMiniatures link on this page)
