How about a hose reel for fire or washing the deck? I don't know of any other hoses in this area unless you brought them up from the forecastle. I've looked at the mosaic photos and they don't really show it well. The Anatomy plan has a representation of the object but it is unclear what it is from the plan.
As far as the derrick storage bin, that wouldn't be one of my first theories.

: Well Mike hasn't posted this so I will because I want feed back. He has a theory that I can stomach. How about a hardware storage bin for the derrick? Think about it, if you had to string up the derrick where would you do it at? Crows nest is to low, rat lines to far away. You couldn't lower it foreward. It is longer then the well deck so that is out.
: There is a picture of the movie model an dispaly somewhere that I have. The set up guys did a shotty job and left the derrick unsecured. It is laying aft and guess where the very top is sitting?
