: Hello all.

: I have a Revell Titanic laying around that I never got to building. I have recently been interested in making a sinking diorama of this. Me, not being a skilled modeler, has no idea if this is possible. Can anyone give me any tips on how to start it? Or am I just dreaming?

: Thanks,

David -- it has been done and is "do-able," if you take it in small steps. Perhaps the "Cadillac" of sinking dioramas is Roy Mengot's wreck model. His site is bookmarked on the main page and addresses building the wreck as well as his guide to building a more accurate version of the Titanic in service. Many of Roy's techniques can be adapted in the smaller scale but it will be more difficult. You can choose how much detail you want to put into your model, but the classic hull shape and downward sloping portion of the aft part of the forward section has a distinctive look that you should be able to capture.

One of the toughest parts of the job will be the same as for those of us modeling the afloat Titanic with the Revell kit -- cutting away all those molded-on railings, but you will have to worry less about damaging the decks and bulkheads around the locations of the removed rails.

I recommend using a small diagonal cutting pliers or a "sprue cutter" available at a hobby shop or through mail order, such as Model Expo or Micro Mark for cutting off the molded railings. This method wa suggested by Roy Mengot and has worked well for me with much better control and is much faster than using an x-acto to cut them away or to file/sand them down.

There are also some wreck model photos for inspiration in the "Models Built by Others" section of the Main Page. Good Luck!!!
