Hi Art

Excuse my ignorance of this post however had a busy week trying to get a twin screw ship round on one screw!

A non ferrous material that surrounds the compass position would certainly entail less correction, but by this I mean:

When carrying out a compass swing for correction when built, as explained previously its called a full analysis swing. This is done carefully as explained and if there are ferrous materials close by it would necessitate several swings as when correcting each component on individual headings a error is induced in what has previously been corrected. Therefore you keep swinging and reduce the headings from all 32 compass points till your on just the cardinals, removing error in one component but slightly inducing it in another. Its all about trigonometrical ratios. You keep going till the deviations are as low as you can get them or the compass adjuster can be bothered!

As a shipmaster I would not expect or desire the compass used for steering to be of any lesser accuracy than the compass used for observation.

So yes the one on the platform was perhaps corrected more easily than the other 3 but not to maintain its accuracy.

Also to take an azimuth/amplitude etc one is not that bothered by the height of eye of the observer this is of more interest to the observer when taking terrestrial bearings as the higher you are the further you see. Celestial observations at these heights only have to be corrected for when taking sights by applying a dip correction. Azimuths and amplitudes dont.

Remember Turner on the Lucy was trying to get in close to the irish coast so he could determine his exact position, she didnt have a raised compass platform and I think he asked the 4th officer could he do a six point bearing. Had to get close to the coast the H&W ships could have attempted it from a greater distance.....

Stephen
