I used 1/4" automotive tape, which most people wouldn't think of for modeling. I chose it because it's easy to curve it to follow the sheer of the hull without kinking.

But the kind of tape really isn't important, you could use almost any type. The key is to avoid overspray. If your line is bleeding, you may be applying too much. I appplied my sheer stripe in several applications, each time applying just enough paint to add a little more and then I let it dry for a day.
