Hi Timothy, and welcome.

I agree that grey rigging gives a better scale appearance than black. Art Braunschweiger's model site has a section on rigging that may help you, at http://www.titanicmodel.net/rigging.html . See particularly the 'Modeling Resources' boxes at the bottom of the page. His model is 1:350 scale, but the sizes are probably close enough to work on a 1:400 kit.
