Hi

I've noticed a white box on the wheelhouse of several vessels from the 1890s, and here is one on the Oceanic, just below the bell on the wheelhouse:



In front cross-section I'd say it were rectangular with rounded corners. There appears to be two or three knobs / controls protruding from the front side. Here's a similar one on Lucania's bridge:

I'm currently making a working of Lucania and so I should be grateful for any information about this:
