I have begun construction of the sunken version of the Titanic using pieces from 6 complete kits. For the model I am using the 1/350 Minicraft (Deluxe Edition) and the other kits are for spare pieces and extra construction material for decks. I will post pictures as I go and explain what it is I am doing. I have not done this kind of work for some time so I am still catching up on old rusty skills so please don't be to harsh on me.

These are from the initial hullwork where I thinned the plastic with a dremel and proceeded to cut the hull in the approximate areas of damage and tears. I realize that on the port side the "flap" of hull is not there but you'll see later that I bent it and reinstalled it to better represent the damage to that area. I predrilled all the portholes because once I start the corrosion and texturing phase some will be completely covered up and are easier to redrill.

This is the first stage of "corrosion and texturing". I mixed flour and water to a semi-solid state and using a mini paint roller went up and down the lengths of the model to resemble the "rust lines" on the real ship. You'll note that I had already painted the hull with vibrant colors. This helps the "homemade resin" stick and later in the weathering phase helps keep some of the original color visible. I started with regular flat brown because of it's orange tint then applied some greens over the top of that. Then I applied a darker shade of brown over that. I over sprayed the model initially with red brown spray then finished with a darker brown to add age. The last stage will be to go over it with "rust" color and a paint brush to add the final touch of weathering. As you can see a lot of the portholes get covered up but since they are drilled the "resin" soaks in and leaves an indention so I can easily pinpoint the holes to drill.

This is the second stage of hull "Corrosion and Texturing". I have already bent the model to Approx 15 degrees forward and right. I used my dremel and thinned out all the plastic down the expansion joint till it was paper thin about an inch fore and aft of the joint line. I removed 1/2 inch of the lower hull, bent, then glued the lower half back together. This produced some nice bends and buckles but be careful or the plastic will break. I redrilled all the portholes once again and put the "flap" on the port side back into it's hole slightly bent and ajar which is more accurate then just elaving it hanging out. The first stage of rusticles are begining. I used clear drying caulking then molded them with an exacto knife. There is another way you can do this using a toothpick but I find that molding and cutting using my exacto is better. I cut to much space for the expansion joint so when it bent was much lartger then I wanted it to be so I cleaned the area up and installed a tinfoil patch and recut windows and portholes. I drilled out the anchor holes and installed them as well. With all my extras I constructed the starboard tear decking that is visble and extended the grandstair case shaft down to E-deck as it is in real life. I used extra walls from the other kits for spacing. I installed B-deck as this is the only whole deck that will be there so I hadt to glue it, let it dry, bend it, and glue the rest of it. Everything else is seperated at the expansion.

This is just an example of the rusticles. Most of the boat deck rusticles where there is massive damage like the fallen wings and the collapsed officer's quarters I used regular modeling putty because I won't worry about it getting broke off. Anything exterior is the clear caulking. If you look just below the promenade you'll see how effective the "homemade resin" looks. It's a very cheap method.

I Started working on the boat deck forward of the expansion joint and forecastle deck. I am slowly scratch builing some walls and dividers for the officers quarters and destroyed wheel house area. I'm waiting for a shipment of railroad scenery textures to come in so I can start applying the "silt" that litters the wreck so I have to be careful not to install anything that will need this treatment so my decks are still apart. I figured the forward boat deck would be ok though as most of it is closed off. It's tough making this plastic due what I want but slowly it's coming around. I started the first stage of rusticles to the boat deck area and will continue this process until it is a "rusted out S$!%box". I'm also waiting for my photetched detals to come in so when that does I'm gonna replace the windows on the officers quarters and B Deck rooms. The cranes will also get installed at this time. The C- Deck portholes are not yet drilled. The flash on the camera makes the white look way more white then it is. The white is mostly shades of orange now just inc ase someone is wondering.

This is the point I am at right now 2:30 in the morning on the 3rd of February. The forecostle and boat deck are just being fitted. Th4e forecastle has a couple more stages of weathering to match the rest of the hull. I like the coloring of these phot because you can see the real colors and not reflections. Still more work to do yay. I will continue to post as work progresses. If anyone has any questions or comments feel free to post. Like i said before am very rusty so please don't judge to hard. Just wait my next prject is to build a 2 different dioramas of the ship sinking. I still haven't decided what stage in the sinking to build just yet but if I get ballsy enough one will be the "break up". Anyways am off to bed.
