Hi folks

I have made a 12-page A4 PDF tutorial for lighting a Minicraft 1/350 Titanic with an emphasis on fibre optic lighting of the upper and external decks.

This is the first version, and there may be corrections or changes to make - by all means give (friendly, constructive) feedback.

It is currently available only until June 6th on a remote file storage site - please download it using this link http://tbf.me/a/ZTbge - it's 6 meg.

I am requesting that this tutorial be included in the TRMA site. Although it is currently a PDF, I am happy to make an html version so it can be part of the website. Or else it could stay as a PDF.

We know that Art B will at some point publish what may be a more definitive lighting tutorial, but until this appears, and even afterwards, this should still be entirely useful material for those doing fibre optics.

The model which features in this tutorial is still not yet completed, and as such I would ask that modellers don't criticise the rest of this build, but rather just concentrate on the lighting aspects (for instance it didn't have PE windows in the photos - it will before it's completed!)

This tutorial could easily be expanded in several directions, or whole new tutorials or info-sheets could be created on certain aspects of model lighting - for instance light-proofing. If the inadequacies of this tutorial or what appears in TRMA forum threads frustrate you, then please go ahead and fill in these gaps for the benefit of other modellers.

As I say in the intro, this tutorial is my way of giving something back to the community of modellers who have directly or indirectly helped me with my model by freely sharing their knowledge on the TRMA site.

Thanks a lot,

John H

I tried to download, but the error message "We're sorry, but this file has been downloaded too many times and is no longer available." appears.

The free file storage site reached it's download limits on the FO Tutorial, so I've uploaded it again - this is the new link http://tbf.me/a/EvAzO - but that will probably also run out within 24 hours.

I would ask if anyone on this forum has got free webspace, that this file could be made downloadable from - it's 6 meg.

Of course, preferably, I'm hoping this file can be on the TRMA site.

Thanks
John H

John,

your tutorial is outstanding! We'll certainly put it up on site. There are many different ways to approach the goal of lighting a model and it helps to have more than one way presented. Thanks for going to the trouble of compiling such a comprehensive "how to" and making it available.

Thanks to all for your kind words about the tutorial.

If the admins of TRMA are happy to have it on the site that'd be great!

Already there's a slightly improved version, which would be the one to use. It is available here:
- http://www.4shared.com/office/jEUdch8A/FO_Tutorial_120529.html (you have to sign up to 4shared but it's free)

Hopefully these links will work for the time being before the Tutorial finds a place on the TRMA site (hopefully).

Thanks again
John H

John,

Thank you for this. I really think this will help set me in the right direction. And don't worry about the "liberties" you took. Like you said, they only help to enhance the finished ship. Your model looks fantastic, by the way. The color of the lights is perfect (from where I'm sitting, anyway).

Great job! ..... Matt

Great! I have a question: what about Queen Mary 2 led illumination? do you suggest to use 0.5 mm diameter, bigger or smaller?

Hi GSP

Sorry for the delay I was away for a week.

Thinking about scale, for a 1/350 model 0.5mm = 175mm, for 1/400 it is 200mm. So that's reasonable if the fibre optic point of light is to represent a light and the reflective dish behind it.

0.5mm is a commonly available thickness - though I can't remember exactly what else was available.

In other words I think 0.5mm cable would be fine for 1/400.

Thanks
John H

Personally, all this fiber optic stuff is way out of my league, and just glancing over that tutorial makes my head spin (in a good way). I always have such high admiration for those who go to the extra trouble to light their models, and I must congratulate you on a marvelous tutorial!

Hi folks
I just noticed that this tutorial is no longer available from those file-transfer sites which I put it on.

So therefore I am requesting that the PDF be made available on this site amongst the other articles http://titanic-model.com/db/research.shtml

The tutorial had a very positive response from other modellers, so I'm hoping it's deemed a worthwhile addition. I don't mind if it appears alongside comments from those who may wish to critique it or clarify points; this would be much better than it not appearing at all.

Ideally it would form part of a whole section on lighting, where different modellers show varying approaches, and there was some dialogue between modellers discussing all this. This would make a very useful resource for someone beginning the process but not knowing where to start, as I found myself when I began.

I would send email messages to relevant people in TRMA, but that facility of this site doesn't currently seem to be working.

Thanks
John H

Hi All
Apologies, I don't mean to harangue, but I am 'bumping' this thread back to the top just this once, because I didn't get a response to my previous posting regarding this fibre optic tutorial. Perhaps it not being viewable at the time made it difficult for people who had not seen it to comment - so here is another short term download location... http://www.filedropper.com/titanicfibreopticstutorial120529

It would be nice to hear soon from people within TRMA or site admins to confirm either way whether this tutorial is to go on the site. I think that it got enough positive feedback to make it seem a worthwhile addition - Art B. kindly wrote 'your tutorial is outstanding! We'll certainly put it up on site'.

It's a shame that the facility on this site to send messages to members' email addresses is not currently working - it could've come in handy here, if there was communication regarding it which might be better taking place away from this forum - eg - editorial or technical points about the PDF (it's just that I'm not inclined to paste my email address here for fear of it being picked up by an external web-bot and spammed. Maybe site admins can look at my user account and forward my email address to relevant people).

If anybody who's seen it would like certain aspects clarified or has specific feedback, a revised version can easily be generated.

Thanks
John H

John,

please don't be put off that your Tutorial hasn't made it up on site yet; it's really just a casualty of summer. Many of us tend to drift away during this time of year because outside chores keep us away from modeling, and in my case, changing jobs has been a major distraction.

I'll provide you with my email address via private forum message and you can send me your Tutorial in PDF format, and I'll make sure to forward it to Sean. (I'd rather not download it).

Thanks
Art
