Hi

I wonder if anyone here could shed some light on this object which is located on the open bridge of RMS Lucania. The image was taken in 1902. I realise few are familiar with the ship, but perhaps similar housings have been spotted on contemporary vessels?

I refer to the loiver box mounted on the bulwark between the telegraph and the binnacle:

Thanks Jason

Hi Jason,

Just off the top of my head, maybe a protective cover for a thermometer or a similar instrument that has to be exposed to the atmosphere? I seem to recall something similar on Olympic; I'll try to find it when I have a spare moment.

Regards,
Ralph

Hi Jason,

I can't say with complete certainty but a thermometer screen seems like a good bet. The Cunarder Carmania had a thermometer mounted on the fore bridge within a screen as shown here:

A similar object is visible on Olympic inside the bridge on the port side. (This comes from an eBay image, but the same photo can be seen in better resolution in Brian Hawley's 'RMS Olympic' on page 103).

Regards,
Ralph

Thanks Ralph. It makes sense - especially with the louver cover.
