I'm just experimenting with some sites. This one is https://postimage.org .

Advantages:
Free!
Allows anonymous uploading (i.e. you don't need to create an account).
Files up to 12Mb in size.
Disadvantages:
Full size images apparently don't display 'inline', but require you to follow a link.
The link address needs to be slightly edited to work in this forum, as follows:

Remove the red bits so it looks like this:

https://postimg.org/image/edyng5q7n/

Here's an example. Click on the link text to go to full size image.

https://postimg.org/image/edyng5q7n/

Let me know if there are any problems with this. I'll look into other host sites later as time permits.

Regards,
Ralph

Next up is Google Drive. https://drive.google.com
I'm pretty sure anyone with a Google account (such as gmail) can use this.

Advantages:
> Free!
> Plenty of storage space (15Gb at time of writing).
> Effectively no restriction on file size.
> Supports common image formats.

Disadvantages:
> Requires a Google account.
> No inline display (you must click on link to view).

Here's an example (click on links to open):

I have now tested Flickr. They do not use the third party function either. Only links to photos so you would have to click each photo to see.

Thanks Morten,

I didn't test Flickr yesterday since I didn't have an account with them. I suppose the ideal host would allow clickable thumbnails to be displayed within the message.

Ralph

Here's https://imgur.com

Advantages:
>Free.
>Anonymous uploading if desired (no account needed).
>Images can be embedded in post, or linked, as desired.

Disadvantages:
>Images unavailable from time to time, though I don't think this is a frequent occurrence.

An example of a clickable link:

The same image displayed inline:

Imgur, huh? Does it look like we are onto something? What does it mean that the pictures are unavailable from time to time?

Ralph -

As you can see I have posted a picture of QM2's funnel (taken by me) through imgur. Fairly easy to use. Should there be a pinned how-to topic for this or some sort of notice?

There is still the problem with uploading pictures from the forum options. Way to small photos and they do not even show up. Is this something someone is or will be looking into?

Hi Morten,

Your QM2 photo looks good!

Re. the unavailable images at imgur, this is something I noticed once or twice on other sites in the past. A placeholder image was temporarily displayed when the imgur server was overloaded. As I mentioned, it is not something that happens often.

A pinned message is a good idea, once we've decided which host works the best. So far imgur.com looks pretty good.

The forum attachment size limit is unfortunately something I have no control over. I too hope that someone will look into it soon.

Regards,
Ralph

Until we come up with something better I think I will stick with Imgur. At least that is a way to get anything posted in this forum. Thank you for your help, Ralph!
