#55750, "Titanic Photo on eBay"

Hi

I don't know if this has come up before, but regardless of any ship details, this must be Olympic since it's berthed at the WSL pier in NY.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/RMS-Titanic-1912-Type-1-Original-Photo-PSA-DNA-View-of-the-Promenade-Deck-/401463608747?ul_noapp=true&nma=true&si=ccEngr%252BOkNDEaFLolK7%252FVdyslW0%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

$10000!

Hi Jason,

That is indeed the Olympic, certificate of authenticity notwithstanding, and it's identified as such in at least one book I own.

The print looks like it's in pretty good condition, but I feel sorry for anyone who spends $10k on it thinking it's Titanic.

Regards,
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

Nice to hear from you and hope you are well.

I feel I've seen that photograph before as I remember the trolley on the deck. I probably have a digital version of it in my Olympic collection somewhere, which I still haven't sorted out :-)

I wonder how many prints they made of it?

Anyway, just after the auction ended I decided to write a private message to the seller, politely stating that the ship was the Olympic and pointing out the WSL pier that can clearly be seen on the left. I shan't quote his response but I was surprised that he chose to contradict me and stating that certificate "proved" it was the Titanic, and directed me to the issuers of the certificate. I was going to respond, but then thought the better of it.

It does seem that when it comes to Titanic memorabilia, what people want to believe is often more important that what may actually be true.

/Jason

Hi Jason, good on you for questioning this. I read the certificate, it was only about the physical properties of the print. They showed that exposure, paper and back stamp were consistent with having being made directly from an original negative in the era claimed. The certificate does not discuss the accuracy of the stamp's text however. It was the photo agency's typing that claimed it was the Titanic and we have seen that such sources are not always reliable in this area.

Quite obviously it proves that the conspiracy theory was right, and that Titanic did make it to New York.

The most obvious reason this is Olympic and not Titanic is because we are looking aft on A deck and there are no screen windows. If this were Titanic the windows of the screen would extend back to roughly the red vertical line I have drawn on the photo. No mystery here.

Hi All,

Not to mention it was published in Dec 1911 & Jan 1912 in Sanitation of a Modern Liner by H. Lome. There is no point in saying "as Olympic" with those dates (and the windows, the piers, etc...). An unfortunate "authentication" indeed! Photo 14 at the link below:

Best,
Eric

Hi again All,

I just reported all of these concerns to the issuer of that certificate by mail and phone. We can monitor their COA database using the cert # to see if the attribution is corrected or even removed. They took my contact information as well, so they seem interested in getting this corrected. I have done what I can.

Best wishes,
Eric

Hi Eric,

I cannot imagine the owner of the print will be too happy if they change or revoke the COA. I guess we'll see if they do the right thing.

Regards,
Ralph

Hello All,

I suggest that anyone who cares to write info@psacard.com and make your case(s). Multi-front "attack" is best. NY piers, screens, 1911 original publication date - all of it and whatever can be added. Put something like "Olympic NOT Titanic" in the subject line. I have submitted everything I can and it has supposedly been forwarded to the gentleman who did the authentication (a sports photography expert). Additional voices will only serve to help. They have changed their minds before - what we need a chorus. And this is not an opinion, like an autograph, but a visible fact.

Thank you,
Eric

I also contacted PSA, since the seller on eBay suggested that I do that (although I'm not that's what he meant literally). When I sent the email I received an immediate automated response, stating that due to a high volume of emails, there would be a delayed response. I hope the message gets through in time.

Hi Jason,

Try this - 1.800.325.1121 and ask for a PSA/DNA Customer Service Manager, not just a rep.
Thank you! They have changed their minds before with enough...stimulus.

Best wishes,
Eric
