#55823, "Question about the Southampton Floating Dock" Tue Feb-13-18 04:10 PMby Jerry Vondeling
I have a question one of you might be able to answer. The Southampton floating dock was build with a lifting capacity of 60.000 tons. It was later sold to the Rotterdam drydock company where it's lifting capacity was 54.000 tons. I had hered a while ago that a section had been removed prior to the sale to Rotterdam. Does anybody have a source for this? I am currently working on an article on the dock. Thanks in advance!
The author mentions that the capacity of the dock was reduced to 54000 tons in 1947 and again to 48000 in 1979. No reason is given for the reduction. The triangular end platforms were apparently removed shortly after the Admiralty took possession. I don't know what other modifications were made in later years.
