The steam exhaust pipes and the whistle supply pipes have been mounted, along with the ladders. After the brass whistles are in place, the uppermost ladder sections above the platforms will be added. These will be painted black, as will the sections of the steam exhaust pipes where they overlap the black.

The large bands on the funnels between the black and buff, which I've elected not to remove, are somewhat problematic because the horizontal railings around the platform actually sat immediately above them. Had I replicated that on my funnels, though, the platforms would have sat too high, so I elected to mount them just below. I also discovered that on the P/E brass ladders, the configuration of the railings around the platforms were wrong so they had to be completely rebuilt.

For those who might be wondering, the bottom section of the ladders (on the real Titanic) were bent slightly inwards to clear the stokehold vents, hence the inward bend you see here on each one.

It could be my incredibly slow net, but I don't see the images you mentioned. Hope they show up soon, looking forward to the update.

#5436, "All funnels now in place"
In response to Reply # 0

The low winter sunlight is not very ideal for taking photographs as it's somewhat glaring and tends to intensify the color a bit, but I corrected that by digitally reducing the saturation by a small percentage. These images accurately reproduce the White Star Buff I used, which as most of you know was matched to the darker 'Ken Marschall' shade within the known range. The second and third photos were taken a bit later in the day with the sun lower, so the color is slightly darker.

In the above photo, I was pleased to discover that despite using flat paint for the black funnel tops, they have a slight sheen in the sunlight just like what can be seen in photos of the real Titanic in sunlight.

Most of the vents are now in place, and in the above image you can see into the stokehold vent forward of the No. 1 funnel. As with all the stokehold vents, there's actually a vent trunk cut into the roof at that point so when you look into the vent grille you see nothing but a dark shaft. You can also see the brass of the engine order telegraphs through the Bridge windows. I was careful to glaze the windows with pieces of styrene "glass" that were completely scratch-free and aligned perfectly so there would be no distortion when looking through them. (In the photo below, if you look carefully, you can see a chart on the folding chart table on the starboard side of the Bridge.)

The above photo also shows to advantage the stanchions along the bulwarks of the Well Deck, the forward ends of B and A Decks, and the Boat Deck.

I took this photo to capture some of the details of the funnel piping. You can also see the water tank in the after corner of the funnel casing. It was scratchbuilt from various sizes of styrene rod. You can also see the teak skylight further aft as well as the awning rafter running between the Gibbs Extractor vent and the stokehold vent.

#5478, "RE: Art's Tank Room finished"
In response to Reply # 0

Last year in another thread I posted photos of the early stages of scratchbuilding all the funnel pipes (below)

http://titanic-model.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=123&topic_id=4087&mesg_id=4359&page=

A daunting project, to say the least. I am pleased to report that all the pipes have been run into the Tank Room, and all the vents, railings and skylight hatches have been installed as well. (Note; the funnel color appears dark and off-hue here due to the artificial light)

On both sides, the pipes are actually supposed to run side by side with no space in between them, but the railing stanchions along the roof edges are not in exactly the right spaces. If I had to do it over, I'd cut out the stanchion in the way of the pipes so as to have no space between them. I only discovered the problem after I started installing the pipes. Given the complex bends and joints involved here, I'm sure everyone will forgive me from this departure from total accuracy.

On the forward end of the No. 4 funnel casing to the right, you can see one of the rectangular galley ducts running forward from the funnel. This, as well as its counterpart on the opposite side, was cut from a single piece of styrene except for the supports that raise it up off the roof.

The bottom photo also does a good job of showing the pebbled glass of the skylight, although I may have showed this before.

Regards

Art
