#6929, "My try Minicraft Titanic"
Sun Jan-19-14 11:09 AMby VonHoldinghausen

Well I guess it is time I post some of what I do with my minicraft.
Only a cellphone camera this far, but I think the images are ok anyway.

My interest for Titanic and ships has been present all my life.
I really do not know why. Could be from when my parents took me to see the Wasa (Google her;) when I was about 5 years old. When we got home my father and mother (!) built me a Wasa-kit from Airfix. I really treasured it :)
From that time on I loved everything regarding ships and the seas.
Hearing of the Titanic and even Andrea Doria made me so so sad :(
Those ships were living beings to me.

I have done some modelling about 30 years ago.
PE, CA and Evergreens stuff for example didnt even exist back then :)

I started my build about two moths ago.
Im really pleased with the colors of the hull. Sadly they were hard to catch with my "camera". They are all Humbrols.
The hull is the first thing ever I paint using an airbrush :)
It turned out ok I think. I guess the rest of my build will be done using both brushes and airbrush.
I have tried some scratchbuilding and it has turned out not perfect but ok I think. My breakwaters are too high for example, but I think they look nice even so :)

Cheers!

Thank you Sir!
Im trying my best with this one.
Trying many things from the Rivet Counter manual, but not all.
For that reason my progress is rather slow.
Well speed doesnt matter I think, as long as it is fun.
Which it sure is :) Im enjoying every minute of reading, planning and building.
I will have better pictures soon.

Cheers!

Pontus,

Great looking model you have started there. Lots of little added details that, even small, make a world of difference and sets yours apart. Don't worry, your photos look just fine. I look forward to more.

Keep at it!

Thank you guys!
There will for sure be more :)
I just love doing this!
Progress is a bit slow though. Mainly because Im almost a newbie to this.
I have to do much thinking and planning before I do anything.
Also reading and studying pictures.
But its great fun :)
I recently fitted the Poop deck. The fit was rather bad though.
Tried some sanding but the fit was still rather bad. I guess I have to
use some putty here... which I dont like :(

Cheers!

Some more. Bollards, vent, and ladders/stairs. Im slow sadly.
But I have to think through many things before I do them.
Feels like every step is a new step.
Always something new to try that I havnt tried before.
Cranes are under construction. Complicated and slow.

But its great fun ofc! :)

Cheers!

Excellent so far, VH! I have now painted the main colors on my hull (AF Red, Black and White), and am about to tackle the yellow stripe. Question: Did you use the decal for the stripe or paint it?

"...but when the smoke had cleared away,
The Mighty Hood went down."

Pontus,

Your progress looks fantastic! Tons of detail and your paint is superb.

I sympathize with you when you speak of the stress in trying to get things right and moving on to new areas of the ship. All that means is that you are trying to make it perfect... and there's nothing wrong with that at all. I was terrified to just glue my decks down. There was no going back after that.

The cranes are a pain, especially if you are super-detaling them... but there are ONLY 8 of them.

I better pull my ship out of "mothballs" and get back to work. You'll be finished before me at the rate you're going.

Regards,

Matt

Matt, this one is for sure meant to end up on the best place in my home.
Otherwise I would not do it.
With the help of this fantastic community and its members, one must be
able to end up with a very nice Titanic.
The important thing is TIME and PATIENCE.
Seeing ones progress is really rewarding :)
Building, reading and planning and studying pictures is nothing but
a joy. There is so much to learn about Titanic and the other ships of her time!

Cheers!

I like your model a lot
Specially the details on the deck

Ive got a question though
What did you do with the hatches?
Is it real canvas or Fabric?

Look awsome! Keep up the good work

I just HAVE to tell you about this thread in another modelling forum :)
Its about "unwritten laws" regarding modelling.

Excellent job Pontus, especially considering you haven't modeled in over 30 years. She's coming along very nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on this one.

Snyggt jobbat!

Time flies :)

Hi again

My build has not been the fastest around here. It went to a full stop after my heartcondition. There has though always been stops and starts through out this build. I guess mainly because most of what is involved in this build is totally new to me, and I set my goal very high. Too hogh maybe.
From time to time there is progress though.
Here are some:

Adding stanchions to the insides of the outer walls of A-deck promenade.
Also replacing most of them aft, as I find the moulded ones way to thick.
I guess I am seeking the correct "impression" of the vessel with my build, not realy the correct placement of every rivet.
I guess I am an impressionist :)
Also added yhe coaling outriggers.

More soon guys

Please mind my english.

Cheers!

Pontus,

You are putting in a lot of work and fine detail into your build. Stanchions are in place. The piping under A deck looks great.

It is the detail work on your coaling outriggers cables that catches my eye. Can you give detailed information about the turnbuckle screws and where you found them?

Thanks

Dave Abate

Hello Dave.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

The turnbuckles are from North Star Models in Riga, Latvia.
Sadly I do not anymoore have the partsnumber for them.
They are for ships in 1/350 and come in different sizes and variants on one fret. Photoetch ofc.

Cheers!

Hi again.

Some friends of mine are asking about the color of the underside Boat-deck.
-Looks a bit odd.
Well it was given a black base first. After that the white was only laid on thinly, not entirely covering.
This was to get some "false" shadow effects, to make pipes and bars stand out more.

Cheers

Pontus

Would this be the 1/350 Turnbuckles and Eyebolts set?

Hi again fellows.

Some progress.
IMPORTANT progress.
This means a lot to me.
Finally.
Boat deck going on.

Now this is not the end...
Not even the beginning of the end...
It is though...the end of the beginning :)

In my oppinion.

Oooopsss. Got a bit dizzy from celebrating I guess.

Darn looks like I forgot one funnel also.
No more single malt then.

Cheers :)

So what about piping and beams on the underside of boat deck?
Anything to write home about?
Well...at least they are there :)
Nice try anyway.

Some more soon.

Cheers

Loads of work to get such...small result.
Well they are there.

Hey, Pontus,

I really am liking what you have done. Adds a lot of realism to the model. The finished product will be one to be proud of. Good job! A good reason to celebrate!

Thanks a lot Tony :)
Scratching that boat deck and adding beams and pipes shure
was HARD work.
I must use an old phrase here:
It sure looks better (great acyually) in person than on these pictures :)

Cheers!

Boat-deck.

Redoing (scratching) the whole thing.
mainly because I want the ribbing and pipes on the underside, which would be impossible using the original part.
Not 100% correct, but it gives the impression of the thing.
Enough for me.

Thanks for looking.

Mind my english please.

Cheers!
