New project!

Some time ago Dan Reed completed his newest semi kit, the 1/144 scale Carpathia. It is time someone take on the challenge to build one.

This is a semi kit, just like the 1/144 Titanic. The hull is made of glass fiber and the parts that comes with the kit is made of styrene. This includes vents, winched, bollards etc, deckhouses, funnel, lifeboats, cargo hatches etc. There is a lot. But there is still a lot that has to be made from scratch. I must admit that four masts with rigging and derricks will be a challenge. Hopefully it will look good in the end.

Status: The hull is primed and getting ready for paint. It is sanded and portholes drilled out. Bow stem, anchor openings and rod added. At the stern styrene rods, rudder and propeller wings are also in place. Bilge keels in place. I hope to start painting the hull tomorrow.

The hull as it first appeared. Quite a lot of sanding had to be done.

An image of the parts that comes with the kit. One square on the green sheet is one cm.

Photo taken today after the hull was primed.

Notice the added stem.

Wow what a nice project!
I am very interested in seeing this kit beeing built.
You will manage it I am sure, even the rigging with no problems.

Lets bring popcorn and pull up a chair! Where can I get a ticket?! :)

Cheers and good luck!

Hi Morten,

very nice, the hull looks perfect with the plating strakes, the stem, hawsepipes, the bilge keels, etc. There seems to be a slight S-curve inboard at the rear end of the upper deck against the green hedge, which should get eliminated, when stiffened by glueing in the upper deck.

When I see this very nice hull, I get motivated for plating my old Titanic hull and build my new Olympic hull (hollow, inner framing, glass reinforced epoxy hull, build from inside out).

Best regards,

Michael

Michael -

Of course this is just an empty fibre glass hull so it is not yet stiffened. When the decks are fitted this will straighen out the sides of the hull.

Morten,
very happy to see you taking on this build. I'm sure it will be amazing just like all the rest you've done. Can you go ahead and take a photo of the Carpathia hull next to the 1/144 Titanic? I'm curious to see the difference in size...

Robert -

Thank your cor your comment. I am afraid that is impossible since that Titanic model was not built for me. That model is in a private home in Germany. But I can take a photo of the hull placed on the Titanic plans that is 1/144!

Regards,

- Morten

Hi Morten,

you are right, it is normal fiberglass flexibility of an open hull. Years ago I thought about plating my Titanic hull and make a negative mould to laminate two plated hulls for myself, but its much more effort and material than building and plating another hull from inside out. I know the techniques from the sailing plane industry and epoxy (or polyester)-fiberglass is a very good material for big hulls, etc.

Best regards,

Michael

Update!

The hull is now painted. The Cunard hull is my absolute favorite as the white line between the black and red look really nice. I have also added the name on the starboard side using Woodland Scenics dry transfers. These are a pain in a certain place to add without destroying the letters as the letters are so small. The port and stern name are still missing. I have also painted the thin brown line on the starboard side near the top railing. This line marks the level of the deck on the inside. Looking at photos one can see that several of the early Cunarders had this line (Ivernia and Saxonia for example).

Hi Morten,

every photograph looks absolutely perfect with very fine lines and sharp bow, like the Cunard original ships. I also remember your Queen Mary shown at TRMA years ago, also perfect and all scratch, as I remember.

I just checked the books John Bowen: Miniature Merchant Ships and More Miniature Merchant Ships, Carpathia is in the second book: built by Swan Hunter, plans are stored in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, Sectional Profile and General Arrangement, but not very good quality (as John Bowen wrote, I haven't seen them).

I only want to say, if somebody is inspired to build a Cunarder from these excellent pictures, these books contain a lot of them in 1/1200, described with references to the shipyard plans. The Glasgow University Archive contains the John Brown Collection for example, with rather complete plans for the Carmania, Lusitania, Aquitania, Queen Mary, etc., most of them rigging profile 1/96, all decks 1/96, lines 1/48, shell plating or shell expansion 1/48, ventilation, etc. Not cheap, but not unreasonably expensive, I only own a set of the Aquitania, which is my favorite Cunarder, as one of Olympic's strong competitors.

Best regards,

Michael

Here is a new update. The poop deck and forecastle is now in place and the first deck house added. The door will be painted brown as I just found out that this door was not white.

Colin -

Yes it is! It is really interesting to learn how the Carpathia really was down to the small details. But it is not easy to get everything correct with the material available.

Forecastle taking shape. The bulwarks along the promenade deck was finished today so I can now start on the deckhouses.

After the forward winch was added I learned that the inside of the drums was painted white by the time of the Titanic disaster. I am glad I saw that before adding all the winches! Painting the drums after fitting the winches would have been difficult.

Dan -

You know this already, but for the other ones who wonder about the decks; these are from Scaledecks.com. Fantastic decks with printed planks and can be ordered in different types of wood. For my 1/1350 Titanic I used the plain pine look. For this model I went for a darker type. I would go for a lighter color for my next 1/144 Titanic but for the Carpathia I think this really works.

Currently working on the middle section and hope to have the boat deck added in a day or two. As you can see the forward deckhouse on the promenade deck is added. The skylight is not glued in place yet, only dryfitted.
