#176, "2010 Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography Update"

Hello, everyone. I've just sent a lengthy and detailed post to Mike Standart over at ET to put up on their boards, and some of the information in that post is not available yet over here, so I wanted to include the updates in a post here. That post will follow below.

First, however, I wanted to give everyone over here news about a special treat with regard to this book. I ran this past one of the trustees last night, and he thought it was a very good idea. Because of all the help that I've received from TRMA trustees and members over the years, I have decided to offer a $5 rebate on the new Lusitania book to anyone TRMA member who orders the publication through TMB Studios. In order to receive this rebate, you need to have a verifiable TRMA account, and you will have to place that account name in the comments section of the TMB order page. Once your account has been verified, you will receive the $5 discount as a partial refund to whatever funding source you had selected (Credit, Paypal, etc.). Remember that I co-operate TMB, it's SSL-secured, so purchases can be made with confidence. More details on this offer will be coming soon.

Below, please find pertinent portions of the post that will shortly be appearing over at ET, along with all of the latest news and updates. It's rather lengthy, but it's well worth the time to read through it:

-----------------------
Quote:

... The new volume’s release date has been set for April of this year in the UK, and will probably hit US retailers around May/June. The volume is set to be the largest Lusitania book ever published, far larger than either “Exploring the Lusitania” or my 2007 release, the full title of which was, “Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography of the Ship of Splendor.” If you’re wondering just how big, which you probably are… think one of the volumes of “Titanic: The Ship Magnificent,” by Bruce Beveridge (et al). In other words, A4 hardback (A4, for those not familiar with UK page size, is 8.27” wide by 11.69” tall). The final page number has not been set (don’t believe what you see on all the retail sites right now, including the cover image), but it’s going to be on a par with TTSM (probably more like Volume I than Volume II).

Now, some of the details of the finished volume are still subject to alteration, as the publisher has all of the material and is in the process of production right now; I have yet to obtain the finished “proofs,” but what follows below will give you a general idea of how things are shaping up.

So what will be inside? Put simply, more than I could possibly have dreamed. First of all, thanks to Amberley’s high standards (especially as opposed to the self-publishing industry), the book is not only going to be in hardback, but it is also going to feature thick, glossy pages – a massive upgrade from my 2007 book on the subject. The text tops out at about 150,000 words, and has been both significantly revised and greatly expanded from the ’07 book. Additionally there will be over 400 (perhaps closer to 500) photographs and illustrations, with an additional thirty or forty in color. Among this vast treasure trove of illustrative material will be an extraordinary number of extremely rare or never-before-published photographs of the ship. There will also be a brand-new set of general arrangement plans of the great Lusitania, which I have researched and drawn, which will feature details never before seen in print and previously only obtainable by obtaining a set of the builder’s plans. No more having to stare at the same inaccurate Engineering plans that have been published before. The publisher has even decided to do a fold-out of these plans in order to help reproduce them in a scale that will show their detail as much as is possible in a publication. Later on, plans are in the works to release these plans in printed format at 1/350 scale, as well as other scales (if there is enough demand) which will be common to model-builders to aid them in their research.

The interior color section will include six carefully crafted renditions of the Lusitania at various stages during her career (one of which will also be featured on the cover). These were executed by the extraordinarily talented digital artist Tom Lear. These pieces of artwork were based on the ship’s blueprints, and careful historical research has been done in order to make them as accurate as possible. Some of these were so stunning that when I saw the finished copies for the first time, I was dumbfounded – they are photorealistic.

For those who have grown attached to the 2007 book, do not fear. Nothing that was in that book has been cut from this one; this one is just bigger and better in every conceivable way. The publisher has really gone the distance in creating a publication that would contain everything I wanted, and my sincerest thanks go to them and to my editor for his backing.

Availability: I will be placing ordering information for this book on my web site (www.atlanticliners.com), and these orders will be placed and fulfilled through my online retail shop, TMB Studios. TMB Studios is a SSL-secured web site that I operate, and payments can be made by credit card, Paypal, etc. I will be offering some volumes directly on my site for ordering with your personal Amazon account. Note: This offer is to US customers only). I will be offering both standard and signed & numbered versions of the book, and links and pre-ordering will be up soon. For those who choose to order the book directly from me, I will also be offering a discount on orders for the ship’s g/a plans when they become available later. (Exact pricing and details are not available at this time.) It seems quite likely that I will be the first one to be able to actually fulfill orders in the US, as retailers like Amazon, etc., will have to wait for their copies to arrive through distributors. However, my stock levels will be determined by the number of pre-orders that I receive, so if you wait until the last minute, there is the possibility of a delay in fulfillment.

The new volume will also be available in bookstores and through retailers everywhere. Its ISBN numbers are as follows:

· ISBN-10: 1848688342
· ISBN-13: 978-1848688346

The exact title of this publication is “Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography,” a shortened version of the 2007 volume’s title. If you choose to acquire the book through retailers, please be sure that you are getting the right one, as retailers like Amazon don’t remove books from their lists even after the publication goes out of print...

Now, if you've gotten this far... you deserve a little tiny preview of what's to come. And no, at this point, no blowups will be provided. Take care, everyone!

Kent ,
I am excited beyond belief. As you know I have Loved the Lucy since I was 12 and I am now 55 , so I have been waiting a LONG time for a work like this. Knowing that 4 of the never before published photos are from my collection makes me say thank you personally for all the extremely hard work that you put into this project. I know that the money alone from book sales is never enough to motivate any individual to go thru all this to bring such a monumental Historical Book to the public. So a Formal "Thank You" . I am placing my order now.
Sincerely,
Bill Young

Bill,

I understand your enthusiasm, believe me. I know what's going to be in it, and I'm really excited about seeing the finished book, all together and in one place, for the first time.

I've set up a new single-page site to help spread news about the book. The URL is www.rms-lusitania.com. Pre-ordering links should be up within the next day or two (if all goes well). There are plans in the works to fulfill orders from TMB for the standard (non signed & numbered) edition through the UK direct, in order to help save shipping costs and expedite delivery, which is very exciting.

Take care, everyone!

#180, "New Lusitania Book - Pre-Orders Direct Now Available!"

(Note: I am placing a duplicate of this message on the Buying Forum, but have posted it here as a notification since this board is more frequented.)

Hello, everyone. I am now officially placing the volume up at my sites for pre-order. Orders will be placed and fulfilled through my online retail ship, TMB Studios. (TMB Studios is an SSL-secure site that I co-operate, where payments can be made via credit card, Paypal direct, Google Checkout, etc.) No ordering through your personal Amazon Accounts or eBay is being offered at this time.

Remember: All orders will be fulfilled in the order that they were placed, as soon as I get my order from the publisher. Pre-ordering well in advance helps me to set a stock level when I order, and ensures that everyone gets their copies in a timely fashion.

Don't forget that my $5 rebate to TRMA members still stands, and will for the time being, but it may be removed at a later date if circumstances dictate. To receive your discount:

1) Place your order in the TMB Shopping Cart.
2) Fill out all shipping and billing information
3) In the comments section, please include: "TRMA member..." followed by your TMB screen name.
4) Place your order
5) Await a confirmation e-mail from me through your TRMA mailbox and reply to it. (This will prevent non-members from hijacking your screen name and ordering with it.)
6) Once I'm sure you are who you say you are when you order, the $5 will be charged back as a partial refund to your funding source.

The boring but important jargon: Remember, this $5 rebate will only apply to a single order. Additionally, although you can purchase multiple copies of the book when you place this order, the discount will only apply to the order total, not to each volume purchased within that order. Also, please do not re-post this offer on other forums. It is only for those who frequent this board.

So, without further ado, order away:
